Stat of the Day
"Wireless Devices"
Source: WorldatWork
In a survey commissioned by WorldatWork, one-third of employees surveyed said that they view receiving wireless devices from their companies as part of their total rewards package. Half of employees surveyed said they felt that these devices signify their status or importance at the company.
But at the same time, 42% of employees said they believe that by getting the devices, they are expected to always be available. Three out of four respondents said they never turn their devices off. Most employees surveyed said they use their wireless devices between one and five hours per day during what they consider non-work time.
Quick Tips
Minimizing The Risk of A Lawsuit
Source: Joseph Pisani, CNBC news associate
To minimize the risk of a lawsuit, Jennifer Feldman, an employment law attorney at WolfBlock, recommends not giving BlackBerrys to non-exempt employees.
That, however, is not always possible. In such cases, attorneys suggest employers write policies that state non-exempt workers should only use company-issued devices after work when specifically told to. Another option is for employers to ask non-exempt workers to leave the device at the office at the end of their workday, says Howard Lavin a partner at Stroock and Stroock and Lavan. Furthermore, he adds, when companies do ask an employee to use a device after work hours, they should make it a rule that non-exempt employees “keep track of that time” on a timesheet.

Hiring and Compensation in 2009: Deloitte and the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists
According to the 2009 Top Five Total Rewards Priorities Survey, the ability of employees to afford to retire ranked sixth as an organizational priority but was the number one personal challenge among the 2009 survey respondents.
Another dramatic shift is that containing health care costs is now the number one Total Rewards strategic challenge facing organizations today. Talent, which held the top spot in 2008, dropped nine percentage points in sliding to number two.
The remaining top four challenges are: retaining talented employees; having clear alignment of Total Rewards strategy with business strategy and brand; willingness of employees to pay for an increasing portion of benefit plan coverage and to manage their own reward budget; and the ability of reward programs to accommodate the varying needs and interests of different generations.
