Article: Engagement, Performance, Retention - Where do Your Employees Fit?

Source: EffortlessHR

The economic crisis has many companies looking at ways to save money and get through the hard times. What this normally means is that they look to lay off people, cut back benefits (which makes good employees look at other opportunities), stop training programs, reduce marketing, and basically "hunker" down. Business owner Lola Kakes thinks this is the wrong way to go.

Article: Where Did Loyalty Go? Ideas to Create a More Loyal Workforce
Source: Charlie Wonderlic, Wonderlic, Inc.

Is your workforce loyal to your company or self-motivated? If your business suddenly went through a very bad patch, which of your employees would stay and work harder to get you out of it, and which would look for new jobs? More often than not, the answer to that question depends on the type of company you have, the type of culture you have fostered, and the type of hiring you have done.

White Paper: EAPs: Commodity or Workforce Investment?
Source: Robert Levy, president, Corporate Counseling Associates

With the troubled economy, calls to Employee Assistance Programs are at record levels. Yet, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) stand at a crossroads, and the outcome will determine whether employers are the winners or losers. Jennifer Mounce, president of Coach Effect, discusses the concept that great managers don't wear one style; rather they adapt, like chameleons with their color, to fit the situation at hand. A Tiny Fruit That Tricks the Tongue
Source: The New York Times

CARRIE DASHOW dropped a large dollop of lemon sorbet into a glass of Guinness, stirred, drank and proclaimed that it tasted like a "chocolate shake."

Nearby, Yuka Yoneda tilted her head back as her boyfriend, Albert Yuen, drizzled Tabasco sauce onto her tongue. She swallowed and considered the flavor: "Doughnut glaze, hot doughnut glaze!"

They were among 40 or so people who were tasting under the influence of a small red berry called miracle fruit at a rooftop party in Long Island City, Queens, last Friday night. The berry rewires the way the palate perceives sour flavors for an hour or so, rendering lemons as sweet as candy.

Quick Tips

Steps Employers Can Take to Create a Healthier Workplace

Source: Nationwide Better Health

While results show that employees think they're making healthy choices at work, the growing occurrence of obesity in our country proves this may not be the case, as 75 percent of Americans are expected to fall into the "overweight" category by 2015 (School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins).

Steps employers can take to create a healthier workplace include:

• Provide healthy vending machine selections - if there's an on-site cafeteria, work with the vendor to offer healthier options. Subsidize any increased costs by charging more for unhealthy options and less for healthy options.

• Create stairwells that are inviting for employees to use (use colorful paint, hang inspiring pictures, pipe in music), set-up walking paths (with distance tracking markers), provide free or discounted gym memberships and encourage participation in group walks.

• Foster a culture that encourages a balance between work/life activities - provide free yoga classes or offer lifestyle stress management courses.

• Offer free, confidential health and wellness programs to your employees such as health risk assessments, dedicated lifestyle health coaching, and online and self-management tools.
