Article: Bring Back the Beer
Source: Kevin Herring, president, Ascent Management Consulting, Ltd.
When I was just cutting my teeth in my career, I found myself working with a business unit that had been swallowed up by the mega-company that hired me. Old timers in the shop of that unit liked to tell me about the good ole days when every month the owner would shut down the plant early on a Friday afternoon and throw a beer bash in the parking lot for all the employees. The owner was tough, they would say, but he wasn't afraid to talk to the workers and he knew the business inside and out.

HR180: Grade School Cafeteria and the Coolness Spectrum
Source: Scott Blackburn
Ahhh, the elementary school cafeteria. I can still smell it. A rich, aromatic mix of "wagon wheels," tater tots, ammonia, and kids. The cafeteria served far more purpose than serving mysterious meals to youngsters; it was a measuring stick of a kid's acceptability at school. Yes, the cafeteria could make or break the reputation of a 4th grader, much like tennis shoes.

Costly employee turnover is the greatest staffing concerns for top executives. However, most companies don't have the tools in place or the knowledge for preventing employee turnover.
The Retention Institute (SM) offers HR professionals a new comprehensive certification program that enables companies to measure the business impact and reduce the costs associated with employee turnover. Additionally, HR professionals enhance their skills by learning how to combat employee turnover and provide value to an organization by positively affecting the bottom line.
The Retention Institute's process-driven Certified Employee Retention Professional (CERP) program for HR professionals is based on The Rethinking Retention Model (SM) developed by retention expert Dick Finnegan. The Rethinking Retention Model is a research-based method that offers three specific principles, seven proven strategies and more than 300 tested actionable tasks to improve employee retention. Stat of the Day
Employer Health Benefits 2009 Annual Survey
Source: Kaiser Family Foundation and the American Hospital Association's Health Research & Educational Trust
Family premiums for employer-based health insurance rose by about 5 percent this year, to $13,375 annually, with workers paying an average share of $3,515 and employers paying $9,860.
Since a decade ago, premiums have risen 131 percent. By comparison, worker wages rose 38 percent and inflation is up 28 percent since 1999. Workers' share of healthcare contributions rose 128 percent over the decade, according to the survey. Some 60 percent of firms surveyed offered health coverage to workers, and 21 percent said they reduced the scope of benefits during the recession while 15 percent increased workers' share of premium costs.
Higher annual deductibles paid by workers helped moderate the overall premium-rate increase, researchers said. Some 13 percent of workers had plans with annual deductibles of $1,000 or more for single coverage.
Smaller firms were less likely to offer coverage, with 46 percent of employers that have fewer than 10 workers providing the benefits.

Quick Tips
Holding Effective Meetings
Source: Dr. Rex Gatto Ph.D., Gatto Associates, LLC.
Meetings are Not an Alternative to Work
• Provide an agenda at least one day in advance.
• Identify the purpose of the meeting and state what is to be accomplished.
• Allow people to come and go from a meeting - do not hold people captive.
• Outline the time in and out: include decisions to be made, action to be taken, time frame, and people involved.
• Conclude meetings by asking what was agreed upon and what follow-up actions should be taken.
